One way to measure economic success is by how our community changes:

Another way is to look at the increased taxes generated for the community.
For example, the census shows us
- 1,333 more households in 2000 than 1990
- 79.6% of Delta Countians own their own homes = 1,061 homeowners
-
Average price of 1-2 Bedroom home in 2001 = $51,399
Average price of 3-5 Bedroom home in 2001 = $90,165
-
Average these ($70,782 x 1,061 = $75,099,702 invested over those 10 years!
-
Estimated increase in HOMESTEAD TAXES collected on these new households: $1,615,000 to $3,200,000 depending upon where they locate. This is an addition to the NON-HOMESTEAD and PERSONAL PROPERTY (EQUIPMENT) TAX increases added by the businesses that employ the additional 2,567 people!
The census shows us, therefore, that even though the population of the county increased by only 740 people, and even though our school age population is declining, our county is growing in positive ways. more people are employed, more people own homes, incomes are higher, and fewer families live in poverty. This is what economic development does for a community. |
